Year of 1729

The Rosemont Cemetery is established as a burial ground. Captain Daniel Bray who helped collect boats for George Washington’s re-crossing of the Delaware River on December 25, 1776. 

Year of 1741

The farmhouse of what would eventually be known as the Bouman Stickney Farmstead is built and stayed in the Bouman family for over 100 years. 

January 1772 

The Samuel Fleming House 

Thomas Skelton married Colonel Thomas Lowrey’s daughter Elizabeth in January 1772, became Lowrey’s business partner, and purchased the house that is now known as the Samuel Fleming House, but is still locally called “The Fleming Castle.” 

July 8, 1774

The Hunterdon Resolves are Approved 

Thomas Skelton was the Committee Secretary for the meeting at that unanimously approved the Hunterdon Resolves and sent delegates to a statewide meeting that selected men to serve in the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. 

Year of 1775

The Provincial Congress of New Jersey met in 1775 and passed the first Militia Law which “requested” that men capable of bearing arms enroll themselves in a local militia. In response, a meeting was held at Bonnell’s Tavern to form the 2nd Hunterdon County Militia. Abraham Bonnell was elected as Lieutenant Colonel.

December 14, 1776

The and Ambush of

December 25, 1776 

George Washington RE-crosses the Delaware 

On Christmas Day, George Washington re-crossed the Delaware River into New Jersey; the area where he crossed was then a part of Hunterdon County! 

The Year of 1828

The Hunterdon County Historic Courthouse is built after the original building burned down. Timbers from the original building were used in construction.

May 30, 1891

The Hunterdon County Historical Society undertook the grisly task of confirming that Cornet Francis Geary remained buried where he fell. They found bones and four silver buttons. 

Year of 1927

The historic jail connected to the Hunterdon County Historic Courthouse is built.

Year of 1935

The Lindbergh Kidnapping Trial 

In January and February of 1935, the eyes of the world focused on Flemington and what is now the , where Bruno Richard Hauptmann was put on trial for the kidnapping and murder.

Playwright Howard Lindsay Purchases the

Broadway playwright and producer Howard Lindsay purchased the house and surrounding property as a gift for his wife, Broadway and movie actress Dorothy Stickney. They used the house as a weekend and vacation retreat until Mr. Lindsay's death in 1968.
