In conjunction with River Union Stage’s upcoming From Page to Stage offering of a theatrical reading of graphic novel “Low Bridge, Everybody Down: The Life and Times of Jimmy Brown,” we’re pleased to offer this one-day graphic novel workshop led by local author Dustin Parent.

Audiences may remember Dustin’s work, “Circus World,” featured as our 2023 From Page to Stage offering.

This workshop will guide you through the process of turning personal experiences into a compelling graphic novel. Whether you want to capture memories, express emotions, or tell a unique story, this class will provide the tools and techniques to bring your vision to life.

Age Group: Teens & Adults

Experience Level: All levels welcome

11:00 AM – 11:30 AM | Welcome & Introduction

  • Meet Dustin and fellow participants
  • Overview of graphic novels and storytelling styles (books will be available to flip through)
  • Discussion: Why tell personal stories through art?

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM | Finding Your Story

  • Brainstorming personal moments that matter
  • Writing exercises to shape a narrative
  • Choosing themes and emotions to highlight your story

12:30 PM – 1:00 PM | Lunch Break

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM | Visual Storytelling & Layout

  • Basics of paneling, composition, and pacing
  • How to pair images with text effectively
