Low Bridge, Everybody Down: The Life and Times of Jimmy Brown, written by Amy Hollander, illustrated by Will Rosado, and graphic design by Julius Harmon for the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor and the National Canal Museum, with funding by the Institute of Museum and Library Services Inspire! Grant.

RUS is delighted to present a Staged Reading of this work in continuation of our “From Page to Stage” series, giving voice to the novel and its graphics.

The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor and the National Canal Museum developed this graphic novel to highlight the last two decades that the Delaware and Lehigh Canal Systems were in operation using the real-life experiences of Jimmy Brown, a Black canal worker of the era.

The first decades of the twentieth century were not an easy time for a ten-year-old black boy on his own in eastern Pennsylvania. Yet, in 1910, Jimmy Brown ran away from home and signed on as a mule driver on the Delaware Canal. The work is difficult and at times dangerous. Jimmy faces adversity and prejudice, but with the help of his newfound canal family and his own light-hearted optimism, he thrives. Jimmy eventually becomes a boat captain in his own right.

This true story shares his life of adventure!

Audience Q&A will follow.
